United Nations Convention on the Biological Diversity gives a clear meaning as to what is Biotechnology. Biotechnology is simply a technological application which uses different biological systems, many living organisms and their derivatives, which make and modify various processes or products for a certain specific use. OECD or the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development also clearly define as to the meaning of what is Biotechnology. It is applying of the scientific and the engineering principles for processing materials by the biological agents. Therefore, the simple answer of the question what is Biotechnology is that it is basically the technology which uses biology as its basis, and applies it to research and development of products in such areas like agriculture, medicine, food science etc. Academic Standards dealing with Technology and Science also gives a clear picture of biotechnology. It states the ways in which human beings applies biological concepts for the production of products and other services. This is accurate, when considered from the point of view of a certain section dealing with biotechnology, in which there is a direct manipulation of the different organisms, which are used for producing the organic products including milk products, food, beer etc.  This technology was performed even before its name was coined at the basic level. It got recognized as real science only two decades back, when it was realised that genes contains certain information which helps in enabling synthesising specific proteins. 1970s saw new development in the molecular biology subject, which enabled the scientists transfer DNA easily between organisms, which are related distantly. There are divisions in biotechnology like red biotechnology, white biotechnology or bio manufacturing and the agricultural or green biotechnology.
